Snapchat vs. Instagram: Which Reigns Supreme?
As a user of both platforms, I can say there are lots of similarities and differences between the two apps. I, as well as many others who use both apps, have a preference over which one they like to use more. For me, I typically use Snapchat as a way to communicate with my friends and post in the moment pictures and videos. Instagram is the platform I typically use to post long-lasting pictures of my life that I want people to see on my account. I think this is how most people choose to use these platforms. Somewhat recently, Snapchat made public profiles a feature on the app where you can make posts and keep them on your profile for people to see in a similar format that Instagram uses. I can't say that I've ever used that feature or even felt inclined to when I can easily post on Instagram.
I don't necessarily think one app is better than the other, but between the two, Instagram is more popular among older generations while Snapchat is used more by younger people. Instagram makes it easier to follow along with celebrities and influencers, which makes it more public-facing and built around sharing curated content. While Snapchat is seen as more informal and private based off of the disappearing messages and stories making it ideal for closer friends to use. My favorite thing about Snapchat is the stories feature because you can post something you thought about or a funny moment with your friends real quick on either a private story with only a select few people who are able to view them or everyone on your friends list. Instagram hopped on the bandwagon with this feature but, I personally would rather post a Snapchat story over an Instagram story.
Overall, I use both apps quite frequently and with different intentions. The things I post on Snapchat I probably wouldn't post on Instagram and vice versa. This isn't true of everyone who uses both apps, but for me I only post on Instagram what I want everyone to see. You can also make your Instagram account private for only people you follow to see, however mine is public.
Ultimately, it depends on how you use social media! If you’re looking for a more intimate, spontaneous way to communicate with friends, Snapchat could be your platform. If you prefer a more visually driven, discoverable, and polished social media experience, Instagram might suit you better.
Which one do you prefer?
